The name translation is dumb, its so dumb that around chapter 45 isabella becomes elizabeth, same person, completely different names. Copying names from GoT doesn’t help either, it breaks the immersion of the story as you will sub-consciously relate back to GoT.

Seems people forgot, translating name is plainly stupid. Places, name, month, or technique.
In everyname specially Chinese, theres many kanji which have many meaning.
Im not really good at chinese but from the translator i have accompany, theres many things to consider to even translate it. If everything can be translated, why people still do translating even they can use Machine Translator ?
You have people name Tian, some people use Tian as the mighty and some describe a god. This is like Detective Conan, who conan as protagonist change to Jimmy. Shinichi in Japan mean One truth, and fckin translate it to Jimmy Kudo wtf. Thats how name translation is stupid and brainwashing

Places and techniques are translated all the time in Chinese.

Sorry, Zoops, but that’s bull crap. SOME translate, yes, and even then they do their best to explain the meaning of the original term.

There’s a reason many translators try to retain the original meaning of something and show it. Even if they change the name for translation sake, they usually leave notes, or post-chapter details, that explain this. It’s disrespectful to the original content not to, especially when (as Nio said) there are meanings behind the names, as is common in Chinese/Korean/Japanese/etc literature.

It’s fact not bull. Look at BTTH, TDG, GoMA, Apotheosis, Volcanic Age, SBM and more. If you don’t speak Chinese the words have zero meaning. Only through translation can readers understand. Tian could mean bookcase for all we know. I get not translating a person’s name because they are used to label you, not define you and trying to add meaning to that is ridiculous.  The point of language is communication and doing things to make that more difficult is obstinacy.
If you are assigning meaning to the name how are defining it in the chapter vs defining it in TL notes any different?

And please, they don’t leave capital nouns untranslated as a sign of respect, they do it because they think the original sounds cooler and plenty of translators have admitted as much.

How are you this dense, Zoops? I read all of those you listed, and not only do those translators/scanlators try to preserve the original meaning (not perfectly, but they try), but not one of them borrowed names from a series like Game of Thrones like this one does. Nothing you say will justify that. They’re literally taking names from an established series and copying them. Entire names. Numerous ones. Blatantly.

Furthermore, in those series you listed, the only times the names change are when A.) The manhua/manhwa artist is taking creative freedom. B.) When there is no translation for it in English, and it wouldn’t make sense. or C.) If the closest translation in English would be a different word/term/etc. All of those situations are fundamentally different from this.

So, don’t give me that nonsense, as those are respectable series. You’re defending borderline plagiarism, if not literal plagiarism.

names should ALWAYS be translated.  everything in original language should be moved over when translated.  that is my big peeve against most of these translations is they dont translate names of people or even sects most of the time.  keeping them original language is just wrong!

i said “translated”, not replaced with another culture’s norm.  TRANSLATED MEANINGS!  so the same understanding is given that original speakers would understand.  if a native speaker sees, “cloud” then translated it to “cloud”, for example.  that is what it is. that is how it is to be read.

Ugh… Ives Windsor?... Ugh I find it difficult to read a manhua with such a censoreded name, it loses all it’s credibility I’ll have to go search for another one with real names instead of this atrocity…

Good job using english names. Now I can finally remember character names. Story is great too. I hope all other Chinese manhua gets english translated names. After all most of the audience are english speakers, the native chinese can just read the raws afterall.

Worst. Choice. In. Names. Ever. Aaron? Seriously? Then it starts outright copying Game of Thrones names? This isn’t even funny, it practically ruins the read for me. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, but I don’t read CHINESE manhua to get ENGLISH names. Did the translator do this?

Aaron was used in alot of things before game of thrones was ever thought of you write a story or translate something this wouldnt be the first time a story mixes culture for name most of which are not even traditional english names so chill

Yup, the official translators thought that for some reason English readers would like it more if the character names were English names as they could pronounce them better. I myself think it’s crap as readers of manhua do not read for English names and they are usually versed enough in Chinese mythologies to not be bothered by chinese names even if they pronounce them badly. This englification of names is kinda the same as back in the ‘90s and early ‘00s when they made those shitty dubs for anime, before they realised that subs were more lucrative. Hopefully these guys will realise it soon too that namedubbing is crap.

    • Dudimus Prime 6 Days, 11 Hours ago

@Zoops It’s not the translation that’s the issue. Please realize this. Translating is a great thing, otherwise how would we read it in an English format? The problem is the choice in names. They not only gave the MC an obviously pandering name. Which, in itself, isn’t that big of a deal. The big problem is how they outright, no shame, copied Game of Thrones. Not just one or two names, either, but entire Clans/Sects are now known by Game of Thrones family names. Numerous characters carry their literal names.

Why would that ever be ok? As I pointed out in another comment, is that not the definition of laziness and plagiarism? You can translate without COPYING an incredibly famous and known series in the western world.

Guiyan Villa with former master Jerome passing on his position to Ives Windsor.  Scanning through random chapters, other character names include Elizabeth, Brad and Diego lol.

Don’t know if these names are part of the source material but it’s strange reading a manhua set in a place with a Chinese name and having characters with Asianish looks then giving them names like “Brad”.  Imagine having all the characters in T.H. White’s “The Once and Future King” set in Camelot, knights in armor jousting and all the characters have Chinese names, “Lady Guan Yee Fei”, “Sir Lan Zhe Lat” and “King Ai Tao” hahahaha.

Started out as being a little goofy but after 1 chapter I found it way too out of place and distracting for me to continue on.

Very poorly executed comic.. It’s all over the place, no depth, poor character development and all of these things are crucial early on. Maybe it gets better? I dunno.. I am not impressed.

What is this ? Stark ? Bolton ? Are you kidding me ? Also why using that kind of name in this setting ? What seems to be the protagonist was looking to be a nice kid in the beginning and all of a sudden he’s almost rapey… Wut ?
