  • Throughout his childhood, Makunouchi Ippo has always been picked on by his fellow classmates. Long hours helping his mother run their family business, a fishing boat store, has left him without the time to make friends, and so he remains an introverted loner, doomed to be beaten day in and day out. Although he hates being bullied, he hates himself even more for not being able to fight back against his tormentors."What is it like to be strong?" he asks himself as he stares at his clenched fist. "I want to be strong." His encounter with Takamura Mamoru, a professional boxer, leads to the discovery of a dynamite punch that opens up the doorway to a whole new world where that dream can become a reality. At the Kamogawa Gym, Ippo now trains with the aspirations of becoming a professional boxer and discovering what it means to be strong.

i get the feeling that the hooligan guy got an incurable disease such as cancer and his days to live are not that long that’s why he wanted to have a pro boxing match as soon as possible and hope to be his last. and after that ippo will be back in the ring as a soon to be worlds number one boxing champ

this latest chapter (1240) got me in the vibe that there is still hope for him, many fans have talked trash about what George Morikawa-sensei has done to Hajime no Ippo (his injury, the long suspense about it, so on) but I think its got even beter, its unrealistic that every boxer in Hajime no Ippo gets almost scot free from their previous injuries when in reality almost every year there are boxers retiting from old injuries on the real world… Ippo aint a monster, like takamura in the manga or like Tyson, Muhammad Ali,
Rocky Marciano or Foreman in the real world whom they just kept standing up… Hajime no Ippo is a story about a normal boy who wanted to get stronger so he has to overcame all of his obstacles and its never too late for him since he is still in his early twenties (24) so he still has time to make a comeback… lets hope that its not too long

I think at the end, they will never meet in the ring. But in the last chapter, the author is gonna show them having a fight, in the ring downstairs in the kamogawa gym, where this whole story started in 1989, and I think will end in 2019. And the usual crew, plus couple extra there to watch. This will be either after retirement, for both. Or when they have reached the peak. I would Actually prefer that ending.

Well, I think this whole book is kinda of lesson. Not everything happens like you want it to. As one great man said, “Happiness is a Journey, not a destination” And that is clearly shown by Aoki, and Kimura. They keep failing but continue on, still enjoying the journey. Ippo very rarely is sad. He is always thinking fondly of his experience as a pro. He is thinking about how he has grown since he was a bullied kid. The people he has met, etc. I think its more like the lesson is to not be afraid to put yourself out there. And try something new And enjoy the ride. IDk I have been reading Hajime no Ippo since I discovered manga in Middle school, around 2008-09, and I have grown as a person, from wanting him to win fast as possible. And getting annoyed by the stagnation, but I think as I age, I have noticed the beauty of this story.

This makes me utterly sad , I feel like my time was wasted on a serie that had a lot of potential. At least the last 300 chapters are completly pointless thinking that all the ,, was he broken or not ‘’ ended like this.. This ending reminds me of Bleach.. it is a pity that great series are rushed like this , it feels like the author just abandons this creation ..And it is deeper than that .. for a lot of us , the readers, a story is more than that. We invested time you know :))) maybe even feelings… and the author betrays us like this

Dont worry he will comeback, it’s a shonen. He will rest, clear his head for some months, then somebody will be killed/career-ending-injury on the ring and he will comeback. He just need to find why he really love boxing. Then he will be Stronger Better Faster.

I only just want Ippo’s career to end, he fought hard while he could. If the author comes with some worthless bullcensored and makes him fight again as if nothing happened or make he getting ‘cured’ or even he not being Punch Drunk at all I will be censoreding mad. You can’t ignore the last 200 plus chapters of Ippo’s story like that. This is absolutely the end, at least for me. I will stick around only for Takamura, see what happens.
Ippo, please, it’s due time to stop, you’ve fought enough.

  • Joe 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago

If this is the end, then, I’ve probably wasted all my childhood/adulthood time reading the whole 1200+ chapter. Morikawa should not have continued the story up to this point if he planned to have this disastrous ending. It should have ended long time ago. There is no cure for punch drunk. so yeah. this is the end. no point on continuing the story revolving on other character, if it been done like that, then the series should be renamed as Takamura The Masturbate Master or Regretful Miyata (of course due to not being able to have a rematch with ippo until the very end. lol)

    Reply 2 1

  • Keyar 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago

Now all that’s left is for Takamura to lose his fight(preferably injure himself so he can’t box anymore), the coach have a lethal heart attack, Aoki and Kimura becoming depressed and returning to their trouble-making days and end up in jail. Oh, and maybe for Miyata to get hit by a counter-counter and end up like his dad.
    Yeah, that sounds about right.

All of this could have been avoiled if he had crossed the line Takamura talked about and just become a monster….. It’s better than loosing like this with regret and now supposedly should be quitting cause he lost.

The current going theory is that Ippo isn’t punch drunk and instead has a mental block. A.K.A. not becoming a monster.

Personally i’d prefer him to be punch drunk. Otherwise the author has flat out wasted everyone’s time on this arc. An arc that if Ippo isn’t punch drunk then it is just flat out horrible writing.

so… no rematch against miyata, losing against a poor man´s ramirez, losing again against a dude that is JUST lefty… this sux REALLY bad. It makes sense the whole “Ippo losing and retiring for his hardhead boxing style”, but for a character developed 1200 chapters this is REALLY wrong. Ippo may have lost and retired when fighting a cool boxer, someone with at least some character development or some crazy good fighter with a cool skill-set (like the young monkey-like dude )  and would have felt ok… but this? this is absolute BS.

He could have give him the victory and let him retire after the dempsey. This reminds me of a book were he buid the main caracter, show the evolution of thoughts and killed him at the end, but there was an gradual evolution to that point not a shot at last sprint

    • TheOneWhoSighs 1 Year, 2 Weeks ago

I swear, everyone is hating this and totally missing the point and it’s hilarious.

What is it supposed to mean? It means KAMOGAWA BROKE IPPO. It’s like you people haven’t read the same series as me, I swear.

Kamogawa’s choices on how Ippo should fight, directly lead to the destruction of Ippo time and time again. Kamogawa is the one that taught Ippo to aim for dual exchanges. Kamogawa is the one that doesn’t throw the towel in even when it would save his boxer. Kamogawa is the one that has been told multiple times throughout the series that he will lead his fighter to disaster.

The story of Ippo, if you actually look at it from an objective standpoint & not an emotional one, is a story of how Ippo’s coach lead him to destruction.

To think one of my all time favorite mangas/animes really went down this path. So censoreding disappointed in this. This has been even more disappointing than bleach, and bleach was a censored show. What was all the hype for? What was all the build up for? What was all the is he or isnt he broken for? All these years of hard work and experience down the drain just like that? Ok morikawa….thanks for wasting my time. I get that not all mangas or anime will have a happy ending, but even those that do not, it make sense story-wise. This on the other hand, makes no damn sense at all. Its just like he said censored it, i give up, lets end it here. So many unanswered questions. So many plot holes and unfinished story lines. And what’s worse is that if he decides to continue it, it wont feel authentic and it will be a hot mess…. and if he were to end it here…. it will still not feel authentic and have ended with a bad taste in many peoples mouths. What a horrible horrible path to have taken with this Mori.. Thanks for ruining years and years of one of the finest, funniest, and coolest mangas I’ve ever read. Great censoreding job.

“This on the other hand, makes no damn sense at all”

Ippo hasn’t been blocking hits for a long time. He’s been sandbagging for a while, so it actually makes perfect sense. And is why Wally’s coach said they were heading for disaster.

      “So many plot holes”

You don’t know what a “plot hole” is. No inconsistency is created by Ippo being punch drunk and the series ending for Ippo.

I’ve never been so sad from reading Ippo before. This sense of sadness only came about 3-4 times from reading mangas and watching anime in my entire life. I actually cried when I read the chapter. My question is though he may have lost. Is this the end? Since I believe he did tell censoredi that when he loses again that is when he will quit. And it’s not like his end goal was to become world champion. That was pressure added on after wanting to prove to the coach that he has become strong. I believe his initial reason for fighting was to find out…what it means to be strong. I’m going to go back to tearing up a bit now.

Gentlemen. It has been an honor to follow this manga with you.

      For all those complaining:

Makunouchi fought a lot of heavy hitters and had an extremely destructive form of boxing. Taking a lot of hits in almost every match. That’s just not sustainable and was going to end in serious health problems eventually unless the author gave him plot armor. This actually follows Mohammed Ali’s story. We all know how he ended up. It’s a sad truth but this couldn’t go on.

Also, it’s good that the author is ending the manga on his own terms. We might not agree with those terms, but they are the ones he chose and we should be thankful for that. There are so many mangas I’ve followed over the years that have gone way longer than they should ahve, had unresolved endings or just disappeared into the ether. I’m happy that this will not be one of them.

I know the journey is more important than the destination and blablabla but what a depressing way to end this. Now the author cant continue Ippo’s career without making it look cartoonish. I know it’s a realistic way to view boxing career and we had lots of fun reading the manga so far but I probably wont have even started it knowing this kind of ending was going to happen. If I want to see this kind of things I just have to look at real life, I read because I know however bad it gets, the hero wins at the end. Well not this time.

  • TheOneWhoSighs 1 Year, 1 Month ago

Anyone looking for a sad ending, is unfortunately reading the wrong manga.

While I’ve made a post before where I was like “I don’t get where the author is going with this”, I firmly believe Ippo won’t be revealed to be punch drunk. Even though it makes sense to do it both in verse & outside of it considering Morikawa’s health.

Because I honestly don’t think Morikawa has it in him, and also there’s supposed to be a big reveal at 1200.

The story has been written pretty poorly for this arc though. It’s unenjoyable, dragged on, and honestly I wish it would end so we can move onto the next arc.

    Reply 6 1

    • Hollow 1 Year, 2 Weeks ago

With last few chapter, it confirmed: He Punch Drunk and Washed Up. GG. It over for this.
I think the idea of Ippo being punch drunk isn’t so bad but with all the emotions and ideas of Ippo’s boxing changing him, being punch drunk just make it dumb. If author instead made so signs earlier this wouldn’t have been so annoying/heartbreaking to read. Instead, we read so much hope is put on the character especially when he could have gotten Rank 2 and have an opportunity in facing Feather-Weight champ.

If this idea of Ippo being punch drunk happen if he faced the Champ, I think fans would be ok with it. Instead when a sub-par for Rank 2, gets hit with a counter from the Demspy and *BAM*
instant Punch-Drunk. No, build up, no real signs, just got hit so hard that he possibly mostly looks like he punch-drunk. At, with Netero there was build up to him being punch-drunk, and he and the coach were always going at it. Ippo always had time to recover from his fights

Plus, the fact that Itagaki hasn’t had a fight since his match for the Japanese Belt. The one good fight was Taka. But, no one is going to stay to see Taka. He a fucking god in the ring, he might get fuck but he a brawler to the end so if you don’t clock the shit about him, then you’re fucked.

Oh censored. He wants to show the coach the new Dempsey works because he knows he doesn’t have long left.

It was also pretty certain that he had lingering damage that he was hiding and just barely managed to cover up.

I think Ippo is actually about to retire. It’s a good thing too, in my opinion. Everything needs to end and it’s better for that end to be planned and foreshadowed than rushed and forced.

    • dezi 1 Year, 1 Month ago

It is different. He had damage, but he recovered. He doesnt believes in himself tho, his the type of person to cling to things, as he did with the dempsey before, he is clinging to the new dempsey, caus ehe cant tell if he is broken or not. This is one part, the other is what Takamura said about crossing that line, thats the other thing subciounciously bothering him, he is beeing this sh*tty because of these right now. Prolly gonna push through and murder everyone. Of course there is a slight chance for a sad ending, but i do not think.

This fight has drug on for 4 months now, and it has been almost entirely about how Ippo can’t judge distances, and how he trips up on their legs, and how he can’t take punches anymore.

Ippo really needs to understand what Takamura is trying to make him understand for at least 30chapters; to get to the top you dont only need to want it, you need to know it’s yours and be angry someone is sitting in your chair. Ippo wont get any farther by trying hard and only aiming to do good matches.

It’s been so long since Ippo got a good god damn fight. I wanna see damnit. I want my blood boiling damnit. Also rip Kimura he was my third favorite character but he keeps getting censored fights.

probably the ‘killer instinct’ many athletes refer to. The desire to really want to win and crush whoever is infront of you. The desire to achieve something great

It’s in a lot of manga, Kenichi had it, Even Sendo had one on earlier in the manga.

u can see that Ippo has no goals. he just doesnt know what to do about his future… Takamura wants to be the best, u can see in his eyes, but Ippo? Since he became the japonese champion, he is broken, how could lack greed for a fighter?

This is what a manga looks like when it dies but the author hasn’t realized it yet. This used to be great, many years ago. Now it’s like the original author died and his spoiled untalented son took over.
